At Forerunners of America, we are focused on warning people about three things:
- The consequences of ignoring our national purpose of drawing people back to God (Acts 17:26–27)
- The consequences of God’s people remaining silent on moral issues in our country
- The consequences of our nation’s rebellion against God’s moral standards
As such, our focus is not on furthering political goals, but the national scope of our message is intrinsically linked with decisions that are made in our state legislatures and Washington D.C. This means that we often find ourselves speaking into political issues—but we do this for the purpose of calling people to repentance and redirecting their hope and confidence to our Almighty God rather than holding disproportionate hope in our elected officials.
Also, in recent decades we have increasingly witnessed U.S. lawmakers legislating on moral issues that have traditionally been the domain of the church. Gone are the days of legislators staying focused on the traditional roles of government such as improving the economy, maintaining infrastructure, and national defense.
So, what are we to do? Whenever the government is imposing laws that are contradictory to the Bible, it is vital that we speak out. This is what the biblical prophets did, and this is one aspect of what Forerunners of America is called to do.
Fundamentally, we must understand that our government is overstepping its bounds by legislating in the realm of morality and what should be considered acceptable. In other words, our government is telling us what is morally right and wrong without relying upon God’s Word to inform their positions. Consider some areas where the government is legislating on issues that God has much to say about:
- Sanctity of life (abortion and euthanasia)
- Human sexuality (LGBTQ+ rights and gender roles)
- The nature and definition of marriage (same-sex marriages and divorce laws)
- Drug use (recreational use of marijuana and heroin injection clinics)
These are not first-and-foremost political issues; they are moral issues, and therefore, are fundamentally biblical issues. Knowing and obeying what the Bible says about these issues is essential if we are going to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world (Matt. 5:13–16).
Additionally, Forerunners of America is on a mission to help Christians understand the status of our nation before God from a biblical perspective. It is impossible to do this without comparing our nation’s laws with God’s standards as revealed in the Bible. And this is impossible to do if we are not informed and aware of what our government is doing and what the Bible has to say about it. As such, we at Forerunners of America must address political issues if we hope to accomplish our objective of warning people about the status of our nation.
Moreover, if we want to improve our nation’s relationship with God, then we must bring our national laws into conformity with God’s moral standards. Every Christian must affirm legislation that supports biblical values and alert others in their circle of influence to laws that are in contradiction to God’s will and ways. It is the difference between God blessing a nation or destroying it (Jer. 18:7–10).
Clearly, we cannot ignore political issues if we hope to accomplish our mission at Forerunners of America. But the extent to which we involve ourselves politically is only the extent to which we are seeking to equip and empower Christians to influence our nation toward God’s moral standard of righteousness. Our goal is not to empower a political party or candidate. We do not exist to tell people for whom they should vote. And we do not strategize how best to implement God’s moral standards through legislation. In short, we are not politically motivated. We do not have political answers; we only have God’s standard by which to evaluate our politicians and laws.
Ultimately, we are convinced that our salvation does not rest in our politicians. Only repentance and following God by faith will save us in the midst of tumultuous days and remedy our nation’s greatest difficulties. In the meantime, we at Forerunners of America will continue to address what is taking place in the pubic square from a biblical perspective so that American Christians can further their effectiveness in being salt and light in every area of life and culture.
