Do Intersex Individuals Disprove the Gender Binary?

The reality of intersex individuals is commonly presented as evidence refuting a gender binary and a universal definition of biological sex. The assumption is that because intersex conditions are exceptions to the normal classifications of male and female, these individuals cannot be male or female. Is this reasonable?
