Preparing for Battle

“Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. … and take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Eph. 6:10–11, 17b). God has equipped us with a unique weapon for confronting the spiritual lies that have produced demonic strongholds within our culture.

No talking point, presentation of facts, logical argument, or emotional appeal can compare to the effectiveness of this supernatural weapon. This is why the apostle Paul writes, “We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments” (2 Cor. 10:4).

Error simply cannot prevail against the truth of God’s Word, which “corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right” (2 Tim. 3:16b). Why then would we ever consider engaging cultural ideas without first equipping ourselves with the Bible? There simply is no better resource for understanding the heart and mind of God on any matter than the Bible because it is the very Word of God (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:20–21).

With the Bible we possess the words that created matter from nothing (Gen. 1:1–27). We possess the words that broke the authority of Satan and death in our lives (John 19:30). We possess the words that struck instant fear into the hearts of a myriad of demons (Luke 8:27–32). We possess the words that declared the end from the beginning (Isa. 46:9–10). And we possess the words that will ultimately conquer all who oppose God (Rev. 19:15).

In our battle against cultural ideas, the Bible is indispensable because only it is powerful enough to discern and counter even the most cunning and complicated spiritual lie: “The Word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires” (Heb. 4:12). Therefore, becoming God’s cultural influencers necessitates equipping ourselves with God’s Word.
